iw-harper-cabernet-cask-reserve-bourbon-whiskey
I.W. Harper Cabernet Cask Reserve Bourbon Whiskey

I.W. Harper Cabernet Cask Reserve is four-year Bernheim bourbon finished in California Cabernet Sauvignon casks at Stitzel-Weller and bottled at 90 proof — Breaking Bourbon calls it immediately likable, with a chocolate-cordial-cherry note that shows up as the flavors come together. Isaac Wolfe Bernheim founded I.W. Harper in 1872; the brand spent twenty-plus years sold only in Japan before Diageo brought it home in 2015, and the Cabernet Cask Reserve is its finished expression, released in 2022. It's distilled at Bernheim from a low-rye 86% corn, 6% rye, 8% malted barley mashbill, aged four years in new charred oak, finished in casks that held California Cabernet, and bottled at 90 proof in the squat decanter. Breaking Bourbon: sweet dark cherry and black raspberry intertwined with caramel chews, vanilla, graham cracker, and crème brûlée, then the cordial cherry, with a sweet, medium finish of light spice over caramel and vanilla that never dries out. Bourbon & Banter found the wine as red fruit rather than tannin. Expect a soft, sweet, dessert-leaning bourbon where the Cabernet reads as cherry and berry over the Harper vanilla. Honest note: it prioritizes broad appeal over complexity, which makes it the wine drinker's bourbon and the after-dinner pour that doesn't need a mixer — and a better finished bourbon than most at the price. Neat, on a cube, or in a Manhattan. Harper, in Cabernet.

Buy I.W.
