Cream of Kentucky Bottled in Bond Rye Whiskey is a milestone bottle: the first rye whiskey and the first bottled-in-bond release from Jim Rutledge, the legendary former master distiller of Four Roses, after nearly five decades in the industry. Rutledge revived the pre-Prohibition Cream of Kentucky name for his own J.W. Rutledge Distillery projects, and this rye was produced at Kentucky Artisan Distillery.
The whiskey is a six-year-old straight rye made from 100% estate-grown Rymin rye, distilled, aged and bottled at the same distillery, and drawn from a blend of 70 barrels. As a bottled-in-bond release it is bottled at exactly 100 proof under the rules of the 1897 Bottled-in-Bond Act. Malt Review picked up honeycomb and baked bread on the nose, with dill, spearmint and apple skin, then honey-drizzled apples and cereal on the palate building to black pepper and star anise on a spice-driven finish. It is a limited release, and a rare chance to taste a Rutledge rye.
